It seems like just a few days ago, people were celebrating Halloween with pumpkins and candy and costumes, and then the other day at my favorite coffee shop, they went from Halloween treats to Christmas gifts in one day. Wow. Right past Thanksgiving! I don't know about you, but I am just adjusting to the change in temperature and switching clocks back to standard time. It's like traveling and adapting to jet lag -- adjusting to the new time without thinking what time it would be if we weren't in a different time zone! This weekend, I could feel it was time to finally put all my cool summer stuff away, bring out my warm winter things, move my house plants inside, and start thinking about the holidays. In doing this, I was struck by a couple of thoughts. First, this summer, when I cleaned out my closets I gave away a carload of stuff in preparation for renting our house for six weeks. When I returned home, I found I liked having less in my closets and drawers and was reluctant to bring things out of storage. And when I did, it was only as I needed or wanted something specific. Interestingly, I did this less than I would have imagined. While we were away, we left our plants outside, letting nature take care of them. I know it may sound obvious, but when I brought them inside I experienced how happy my plants make me feel! They add so much life and natural beauty to our space. These few things reminded me of the importance of keeping it simple and how less is more. By letting go of things that we don't want or need and taking care of the things we do, we create space inside of ourselves and a sense of true peace and happiness. By creating peace in our environment, we create peace within ourselves, and ultimately peace in the world. This is a powerful way to get ready for the holidays. Everyday Feng Shui. It's all right here! What are some simple things you do or can do to get ready for your holiday season? Please feel free to share any insights or results. I would love to hear from you!
